Materialise "OnSite" online quoting and ordering web application
materialise-onsite.com
view larger Materialise OnSite is an online application that allows customers to order physical prototypes by uploading their 3D model files. I led the user research and UI design phases in the complete redesign of the site.

Methods:
Analysis: competitive analysis, stakeholder interviews
User research: contextual interviews, phone interviews
UI evaluation: usability testing (lab and contextual), usability inspection (guideline and scenario-based)
UI design: sketching, iterative design and validation with stakeholders

Deliverables:
Best practices presentation, usability evaluation report, personas, prioritized user requirements, UI wireframes, task flow diagrams, UI Documentation

Insights:
It helps to have one team/person do user research and design to eliminate the need to transfer knowledge from research to design phase. Not all questions that came up during design could be answered using personas and requirements documents, but were easy for me make a decision "on the spot" because I was so familiar with the users.
Contextual interviewing/usability testing produced better results than interviewing/testing out of context. During in-context interviewing and testing I saw the users' actual workflow from 3D model to placing an order; the participants showed artifacts which in turn jogged participants' memory, eliciting more comments about their past experiences with the application.

Feedback:
"We are very happy with the result of the new Materialise Onsite and it brings us the results we were expecting: since the new launch we see an increased number of customers coming to the site and also ordering." - Jurgen Laudus, Director, AMS at Materialise, NV

Materialise eTools Online Management Tool
Internal web-based application
view larger eTools Online Management Tool is a Web-based application used by IT personnel to monitor the status of different servers and components that process 3D prototype files before they're sent to 3D printing machines. My role was to validate the initial mockups with users and develop them into a set of documented wireframes.

Methods:
Analysis: stakeholder interviews
User research: contextual interviews
UI design: sketching, iterative design and validation with users and stakeholders

Deliverables:
Personas, UI wireframes, UI documentation

Insights:
Assumptions must be validated by user research. We originally belived that designers would be interested in the tool. User research showed early on that designers didn't need any of the tool's proposed functionality. We were able to drop the designer persona and focus the UI's design on the needs of the remaining two personas.
Showing work-in-progress designs to potential users yields valuable insights. One advanced user suggested that we not only show a status diagram, but also include a sortable status table listing all errors and warnings. This is something that we did not think of when analyzing the personas we created for this product.
Tochka.net Web Portal
tochka.net
Analysis: competitive analysis, stakeholder interviews
UI evaluation: usability testing, usability inspection
UI design: sketching/wireframing, rapid iterative design and evaluation (RITE)

Deliverables:
Personas, user scenarios, UI wireframes, annotated UI wireframes, UI documentation

Insights:
It helps to be user-centered, even when no user research data is available. For example, "best-guess" user scenarios provided a useful starting point for generating requirements for version 1.0 of the city guide section on tochka.net (afisha.tochka.net).
Innovative solutions don't just happen by accient but by carefully analyzing user needs and identifying/eliminating stakeholder biases.
Innovative solutions require multiple design/develop/test iterations. The chronoscope visualization went through an internal review and a user test to become "live"-worthy.

Solution highlight:
The "Chronoscope" grid for the movie section of afisha.tochka.net that displays a graphical representation of the movie showtimes by movie and theater.

Deliverables:
Full usability inspection reports (25-35 pages long, like the Starbucks demo report), and first-look usability inspection reports (8-12 pages long)

Feedback:
"I've hired many UX people over the last several years. Like most really good people working in this field, Paul demonstrates an acute awareness of the needs of the user. What sets his assessments, reports, and recommendations apart from others I have hired is his seamless inclusion of correlative visual design, interface design, and strategic elements in his site reviews and recommendations. In short, Paul's reports go beyond identifying usability issues and touch on issues and observations that affect user motivation and engagement as related to implementation of site business goals. It's been said before (It's not "can they use it," but "WILL they use it"), and this is the full-package approach Paul takes. Everything falls into place, right down to the fact that his presentations are well designed, an area often passed-over by many User Experience people." - Brian Bram, Director of Creative Services, Bramster
